Dr. Kate Neuman is a physician working for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). She is one of many sent on a humanitarian mission to post-Ceaucescu Romania. Many children, mostly orphans, are desperately ill, and Kate does what she can, in her short stay, to save them. One child in particular gains her attention. He is an abandoned baby, seven months old, who suffers from an unknown disease that almost kills him. Only frequent blood transfusions allow him to rally. Kate decides to adopt the little boy, whom she names Joshua, and bring him to the United States, where she can use the resources of CDC to save his life. Her research shows that Joshua has a peculiar mechanism that uses blood to bring about rapid cellular changes and healing. Meanwhile, Vlad Dracula has returned to Romania to die. He has an heir, a baby who carries his genes, and who will be invested during a special ceremony. But something has gone wrong, and Dracula's minions are afraid to tell him the child has disappeared. |
